Q: What is the Qur'an's view on seeking revenge?

Category: Halal and Haram, Published on: 03/23/2025 11:16:33

A: The Quran encourages forgiveness and patience over seeking revenge. While the concept of justice is emphasized in Islam, it is balanced with the principles of mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Seeking revenge is generally discouraged, and Muslims are encouraged to forgive others and seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts whenever possible. Here are some Quranic verses that highlight the importance of forgiveness and patience: Surah Al-A'raf (7:199): "Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant." Surah An-Nur (24:22): "And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." Surah Ash-Shura (42:40): "And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers." Surah Al-Qasas (28:54): "Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them, they spend."

Q: What lessons can contemporary societies learn from the story of Prophet Salih and the fate of the Thamud as described in the Qur'an?

Category: Prophets and stories, Published on: 03/23/2025 11:21:50

A: Contemporary societies can draw several important lessons from the story of Prophet Salih and the Thamud: The Dangers of Arrogance and Disobedience: The Thamud's downfall was precipitated by their arrogance and refusal to heed divine warnings. This serves as a reminder of the consequences of pride and disobedience to moral and spiritual guidance. The Importance of Gratitude and Humility: Despite their material success and technological achievements, the Thamud were ungrateful and morally corrupt. Their story emphasizes the need for gratitude, humility, and ethical conduct. The Role of Signs and Miracles: The miraculous she-camel was a clear sign from Allah, yet the Thamud still rejected it. This illustrates that signs and miracles alone are insufficient if individuals are not open to faith and understanding. Accountability and Divine Justice: The Thamud faced severe punishment for their transgressions, highlighting the principle of accountability and the certainty of divine justice. Respect for Divine Guidance: The narrative underscores the importance of respecting and following divine guidance as delivered by prophets, who are sent to guide humanity toward righteousness and away from harm. Quranic verses: "And We have certainly sent to them a Book which We detailed by knowledge - as guidance and mercy to a people who believe." (Surah Al-A'raf 7:52) " As for Thamûd, We showed them guidance, but they preferred blindness over guidance. So the blast of a disgracing punishment overtook them for what they used to commit." (Surah Fussilat 41:17) "AND UNTO [the tribe of] Thamud [We sent] their brother salih He said: 'O my people! Worship God alone: you have no deity other than Him. Clear evidence of the truth has now come unto you from your Sustainer. 'This she-camel belonging to God shall be a token for you: so leave her alone to pasture on God's earth, and do her no harm, lest grievous chastisement befall you. 'And remember how He made you heirs to [the tribe of] `Ad and settled you firmly on earth, so that you [are able to] build for yourselves castles on its plains and hew out mountains [to serve you] as dwellings: remember, then, God's blessings, and do not act wickedly on earth by spreading corruption.' The great ones among his people, who gloried in their arrogance towards all who were deemed weak, said unto the believers among them: 'Do you [really] know that salih has been sent by his Sustainer?' They answered: 'Verily, we believe in the message which he bears.' [But] the arrogant ones said: 'Behold, what you have come to believe in we refuse to regard as true!' And then they cruelly slaughtered the she-camel and turned with disdain from their Sustainer's commandment, and said: 'O Salih! Bring about that [punishment] with which thou hast threatened us, if thou art truly one of God's message bearers!' Thereupon an earthquake overtook them: and then they lay lifeless, in their very homes, on the ground. And [Salih] turned away from them, and said: 'O my people! Indeed, I delivered unto you my Sustainer's message and gave you good advice: but you did not love those who gave [you] good advice.'" (Surah Al-A'raf 7:73-79)
